EVERY WOMAN DOES COUNTS!

Join us this Monday, February 8th North Steps of the Capitol

Recently, the State made drastic cuts to life-saving breast cancer services for women in California. Next Monday, breast cancer survivors, advocates and legislative champions will gather at the Capitol with the rallying cry, "Every Woman Does Counts!"

The Every Woman Counts program provides mammograms to underserved women, but closed its doors to new entrants on January 1 and will not reopen until July. When services are reinstated, the program will no longer screen women aged 40–49. The cuts have a minor impact on the budget deficit — saving less than 0.5 percent — but will have grave consequences for California women. Additional cuts are proposed for fiscal year 2011 and will leave many of California’s most vulnerable women with no options. We need you, your voice and your passion for change to let our elected officials know we find these cuts unacceptable.

Early detection saves lives. When breast cancer is found early, the five year survival rate is 98 percent. However, the lack of regular screening leads to diagnosis at later stages of the disease when treatment is more expensive and survival is less certain.
