This program was conceived in response to a tragic house fire in Southeast Sacramento, which caused the death of two young children. In an effort to save lives in case of a fire, off-duty members of Firefighters for Sacramento City, volunteers and Sacramento City Council Member Kevin McCarty canvassed the neighborhood to promote awareness.
Homes that were lacking them received free installation of smoke detectors and batteries were provided free of charge for those households that needed them to ensure they had working detectors. Firefighters took the opportunity to educate families on fire safety and the importance of routine maintenance of smoke detectors and on having a plan in case of a fire.
